Licensure and Certification Information

The University of New Haven offers a B.S. Accounting, M.S. Accounting and M.S. Taxation each designed to help students prepare to sit for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam. Please note that students cannot earn CPA certification simply by earning a college degree. According to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy () website, students will first need to determine where they intend to sit for the CPA exam, since the education requirements to sit for the CPA exam are different for every state. Most states require 150 total semester hours to sit for the CPA exam. Some state licensing board regulations include narrow educational requirements such as specific semester hours in accounting and business courses, and there are additional considerations such as experience, age and residency that must be considered.

Although the MasterÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ™s in Accounting and the MasterÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ™s in Taxation do not specifically lead to licensure as a CPA, it is possible that in combination with appropriate undergraduate coursework, the specific courses taken will count toward the educational requirements in most states.

The University of New HavenÐÓ°ÉÔ°æ™s 30 credit hour M.S. in Accounting and M.S. in Taxation programs meets some of the educational requirements for CPA licensure in:

  • AL, AK, AS, AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, DE, DC, FL, GA, GU, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, MP, MT, NE, NV, NH, NJ, NY, NM, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, PR, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, VI, WA, WV, WI, and WY.

Students who are interested in working in any of these states are strongly encouraged to contact the appropriate state board and consult with your academic advisor.
